Fun In The Sun '81

I returned to The Golden Isles for my second interview and a tour of my impending new home. Eric and his wife Robin were gracious hosts and I enjoyed the sights and scenes. By the end of the weekend I officially agreed to join Coastal Georgia’s 101Q.

The station put me up in temporary housing until I found my own place. The Sheraton By The Sea was easily the best and nicest accommodation that I stayed in throughout my entire time in the Southeast. It was a one bedroom villa pleasantly decorated with trendy grass cloth wall coverings. Sliding glass doors opened to a short beach path that led between sand dunes to the beach. The ocean was prominently visible from all the back windows. I was NOT motivated to apartment shop. This was island living I had never known.

It was nice being back in an Evening time slot and not having to get up before the crack of dawn. Terry Grove followed me on the All Night Show. We struck up a friendship and he became one of the best guys I ever worked with. His Dad was Bill Grove, the longtime #1 6 o’clock news anchor on WJXT-TV 4 in Jacksonville.

One night, I got a call on the request line from a very familiar Jerry Lee who I knew from Lake City. He said he turned on the radio and there I was. Small world. Jerry was always on with a broad smile and an acoustic guitar nearby. I knew him from our craw dad eating days at Three Rivers not far from Lake City at Don Suhl’s riverside cabin that stood on the banks of the Santa Fe  anchored by mile high stilts. We agreed to meet up and yuk it up with old stories.
