Rock 95 Part 5 Get Out of Dodge
When we got to Rich’s place, he started dialing for dollars and talking to a lengthy list of people. The plan that was hatched was to involve the General Manager and challenge Jamie’s authority to fire someone. Word came back quickly from the GM that there would be a staff meeting in 24 hours to discuss this matter.
With the state of the station in the past month, I knew I had to get out. It just was not the same. Gone was the “all for one and one for all feeling.” The music format that made us a success was stripped away and we were left with the same pop that everyone else in town was playing. Then, Jamie had invited me on his Morning show right after my All Night and it was a total disaster. He used me as a punching bag on air and it turned into a humiliating experience.
At the Rock 95 staff meeting the GM announced that the station was going to forget what happened with Rich and I and that we were reinstated to our former positions. Any future personnel issues would be handled directly through him. He then asked if there were any questions or comments from us. I stood up and announced that this might be an appropriate time to submit my resignation because I would be joining Butch Peiker at WDSR and 94Q in Lake City. Mr. GM said good luck and asked me to leave the meeting. There were a few surprised looks at that conference table, but the one I will not forget was Jamie Brooks’ expression.
I had been talking to Butch about joining him out in Lake City on his new stations. Finally, we were able to work it out and I got to join Country 1340 and 94Q, initially in Evenings, then Afternoons. I trusted and respected Butch and knew in my heart that I was making the right decision. Yes, it was a smaller market, but I needed to make this move.
So, in a 48-hour period, I was fired, re-hired and quit! And…I got a new gig from a guy who gave me my first big break…and now my second. I will always be grateful to Butch Peiker.
The Rock 95 experience was now committed to my history book. I left nearly one year to the day from when I walked into the On Air studio for my first show. Months after I had left, I heard Jamie on Rock 104.5.
