Leaving Central Jersey in The Broad Daylight
It still felt like winter in Jersey and the March 26th departure day had come. My '69 Pontiac was packed tight with my worldly belongings and I set off for the promised land with 600 bucks in my pocket. NJ was now in the rear view mirror.
My half point stop to Florida was usually Dunn, North Carolina at the Windmill Inn. The trip South wasn't all Interstate on 95 as it is now. It was still under construction. Large portions of North and South Carolina were on state roads that funneled down to two lanes. The iconic Pedro Sez South of The Border Signs counted down the miles to the South Carolina line tourist attraction. Georgia was one huge speed trap than ran mostly on Route 17. The old Talmadge Bridge over the Savannah River was a hairy ride. It was an old steel bridge that traveled way high with a see through grate road surface that seemed like it was banked the wrong way. I'm glad that thing is history.
