The Upside To Getting Up
Mornings on the Q weren’t my first rodeo, I had just done the time slot in my last station at WBTY and filled it for Mike James at WDSR/94Q. So, I wasn’t completely foreign to working before the crack of dawn. I strived to be positive and committed myself to being a winner with my latest challenge. The key to being successful in a morning show is to get enough rest to be mentally sharp to handle what is usually the most demanding time slot on any station. The pace is quicker and you’re interacting with multiple players to provide your audience with information and entertainment. Being young and social, I didn't always handle that part so well. 101Q had the advantage of having that auto system, so it almost made it seem as if I had a live engineer to do all the music mixes and pound all the buttons for me, like the major personalities had in markets like New York or LA. Linda was an excellent and talented News Lady and easy to converse with on air. Dennis was great with sports and we had many a conversation about Braves baseball. I began to have fun in the morning and started to look forward to my shows. Eric, the Program Director was outstanding to work with and following my show, we had a lot of fun recording commercials with characters and scenarios that we cooked up. Judy came on board to write and help produce commercials as well. Every day, one of us would head over to El Cheapo and bring back Dixie Fried Chicken for lunch.
Our Summer Theme was “Fun In The Sun ‘81”. All the On Air Personalities went to the beach together to give away suntan lotion and beach towels. We hung around and drank beer. It wasn’t work, it was playtime.
During the week, around 2, I’d head over to the vacuum shop for Happy Hour. After settling in, I felt this Morning thing wasn’t so bad after all.
The ratings came out and we were the number one station on the coast and The Golden Isles. I put on some sun glasses to bask in all that glory. I didn’t let Globehead near my shades.
